Trailer Tracking Solutions
The foretrack trailer solution offers the same market leading selection of services as our standard vehicle tracking platform with the added benefit of specially designed trailer hardware including:
- Rugged waterproof enclosure
- Battery back up
- Internal charging circuit
The unique foretrack platform is entirely web based meaning no software files are required on any individual PC. Track and monitor your mobile assets from anywhere with an internet connection using our secure log in procedure.
Key benefits:
- Improved trailer utilisation
- Increased security of sensitive loads
- Locate 'lost' trailers
The foretrack solution is designed to help your business reduce operating costs and increase revenues, through improving productivity, efficiency and ultimately delivering better customer service.
How it works:
The unit is installed into the trailer and can be connected up through the vehicles’ cabling so that when the trailer is connected to a cab or tractor unit the device is running from the main vehicle power. As soon as the trailer is disconnected the device uses its own battery power to generate location reports.
Length of operating time:
This will be subject to how the unit is configured to report. We are able to customise the reporting level in order to extend the life of the battery when the trailer is disconnected. It may be possible to achieve up to 3 months of reporting on a stand alone trailer.

GPS Vehicle Tracking Background
GPS (Global Positioning System) vehicle tracking makes use of signals from satellites to work out a vehicle's physical position, wherever it is in the world. This is certainly the most accurate way for a vehicle tracking unit to identify its location and is generally accurate within 10 metres or less.
How does it work?
GPS vehicle tracking works as a result of a network of satellites in space transmitting an accurate time and location signal. The vehicle tracking device that is installed into the vehicle is tuned to receives this signal from a number of satellites (usually a minimum of 4) simultaneously and uses the information to calculate its longitude and latitude. The GPS vehicle tracking device then sends this information at regular intervals to a central server over the mobile phone data network. From this server the tracking information is made available to the user through some kind of PC based tracking application.
GPS Technology:
GPS Antennas need to be able to receive signals from at least 4 satellites in order to be able to calculate their position to withn a few metres. There are always at least 24 satellites in operation at any one time which in turn means that there are always a minimum of 4 satellites within line of sight anywhere on Earth. In fact there are significnatly more than 24 active GPS satellites deployed in orbit, which means that GPS vehicle tracking receivers are generally able to receive more satellite feeds which enables an even more accurate positional fix to be calculated.
GPS Restrictions
GPS vehicle tracking can be limited or innacurate when in certain types of environments or when installed incorrectly. When vehicles enter locations such as tunnels, underground car parks and vehicle depots the GPS signal can be obstructed and is not received by the antenna. This results in the vehicles location being reported back as 'unknown'. This does not normally cause a problem as the vehicle tracking unit will start reporting its location again as soon as it is clear of the obstruction.
Many vehicle tracking applications are able to plot the vehicle's position on a satellite or aerial photograph image overlay enabling you can see a satellite 'birds eye' view of the vehicles last know location.
It is essential that the antenna is installed in a suitable position by the engineer installing the vehicle tracking system. This needs to be a location where the antennas line of sight will not be obstructed by a metallic object, and so is usually directly under the top of the vehicles dashboard. Some vehicles have polarized or heated front windscreens; these types of windscreens are metallic and can obstruct a GPS signal. Where this is the case the engineer needs to install the vehiucle tracking antenna in a more suitable position in the vehicle.
GPS vehicle tracking is the most common type of vehicle tracking system on the market today due to the its ability to quickly and accurately record the vehicles location and record the vehicles mileage and speed precisely. GPS is a free service and no subscription is required, although the service that communicates the vehicle's position over a mobile phone network to a secure server does incur a cost, and so is normally provided as a subscription service.
